How to turn a PDF into a course

Step by step — and why the quiz part is what actually makes it work.

The short answer

Uploading a PDF to a reader or a chatbot stores it — it does not make you learn it. To turn a document into a course you need four things the file itself lacks: structure (what to learn, in what order), explanation at your level, retrieval practice (being made to recall, not re-read), and feedback. PDF Course does all four from the document you already have, in a few minutes.

Step 1 — Upload the PDF

Drop in a textbook chapter, research paper, slide deck, onboarding handbook or spec — any file up to 50 MB with selectable text. Text is extracted in your browser first, so the AI works from your actual document, not a paraphrase of its title.

Step 2 — Ground it on the pages that matter

Generate from the whole document, or open the page picker and click exactly the pages you need to learn — one chapter, the terms section, the lecture before an exam. A topic focus is optional: leave it blank for general coverage, or name the concept you want drilled.

Step 3 — Pick your level, generate

Beginner keeps things simple; Expert gets nuanced, deeper coverage. Generation produces up to 12 lessons, each broken into small one-idea-at-a-time steps with a knowledge check between them, plus a quiz at the end of every lesson and a glossary of the terms and abbreviations in your material. Diagrams and math render properly where the content needs them.

Step 4 — Study by being tested

This is the step readers and chatbots cannot do: you have to answer. Each check forces recall of what you just read, wrong answers explain why they are wrong, and the lesson quiz closes every session with retrieval practice — the single most reliable effect in learning research. Progress, points and streaks make finishing feel like momentum instead of discipline.

Need a pure exam simulation instead? The standalone quiz generator turns any upload into a 5–250 question practice set in six formats: multiple choice, multi-select, true/false, short answer, matching and ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn a scanned PDF into a course?

Not yet — the PDF needs selectable text. Scanned images without a text layer are not supported (no OCR). Most exports from Word, LaTeX, PowerPoint and research portals have selectable text and work fine.

How long does generation take?

A full course from a typical chapter or paper takes a few minutes. Progress is shown live, and you can close the tab — generation continues server-side and a notification appears when the course is ready.

Can I generate from just one chapter?

Yes. Before generating, pick the pages that matter — from a visual page picker, a range, or specific page numbers — so the course is grounded on exactly the material you need to learn.

Is it free?

There is a free tier with a one-time starter credit allowance and no card required. Pro ($4.99/month) adds 150 monthly credits for regular, larger generations.
